Timothy L. Sweeney has held the office of Judge of the Third Judicial Circuit since he was appointed and sworn in 2010. The Third Judicial Circuit is composed of Doddridge, Pleasants and Ritchie Counties.
Before his appointment as Judge, Sweeney was elected Prosecuting Attorney of Pleasants County in 1984 and served until his appointment. He also maintained a private law practice from 1981 until 2009.
In addition to his experience as a prosecutor, Judge Sweeney has extensive experience as a civil trial attorney. “This experience has proven very beneficial in performing my duties on the bench,” Sweeney said.
His legal career includes terms as Fiduciary Commissioner, Court Commissioner, Lawyer Disciplinary Board (1997-2003) and general counsel to The City of St. Marys, the Pleasants County Bank and Willow Island FCU. Sweeney was admitted to practice before the WV Supreme Court of Appeals and the Fourth Federal Judicial Circuit, Northern & Southern Districts. He has also served as President and Director of the West Virginia Prosecuting Attorney’s Association.
